The next step -----> Bring Your Own Device
Here are the next steps in Gr. 3-4 at Franklin:
- Put finishing touches on the wireless policy with CATC team. (Example here)
- Plan a great initial lesson which would include the option of BYOD. Set a date and time.
- Send the policy letter home (which would include details of the first lesson) with students for parent signature.
- Put the date on your classroom calendar and start a countdown!
Ideas for first BYOD lesson:
- Watch the video 'The Story of Stuff'. Create a TodaysMeet chat for discussion about the video.
- Plan a research period for a topic of study in class.
- Plan a QR code scavenger hunt. ('Scan' is very easy to use.)
Follow-up to the first BYOD lesson:
- Discuss with the students how it went, how they felt about using their own devices in class, were there any issues, do we need to do any problem solving or tweeking, etc. etc.
- Decide as a group if there are any apps that students should download at home for use at school.
Once you've had a successful first experience, both you and your students should celebrate!
Now you're ready to explore new ways to make use of BYOD lessons and activities ......
- Use 'Maps' or 'Google Earth' to search for houses, school, local parks or playgrounds, cities or countries where you were born, have visited, where historical events took place, famous landmarks, etc. etc. Take 'pictures' and save for a project using Screenchomp, Show Me, ComicLife or other photo editing app.
- Write on your class blog.
- Invite another class to blog with you, explore blogging communities, quad-blogging.
- Fill responses in on a Google Spreadsheet.
- Use 'Poll Everywhere' to gather student input.
- Use TypeWith.me - an online, collaborative, real-time word processor that works well on the iPad.
- Explore a new app together and share feedback using some type of social media.
- Create and edit a classroom Google Site.
- Create a Keynote presentation.
