- iPod Project launched - Apple training sessions for participating teachers
- wireless networks installed in classrooms in 3 participating elementary schools
- teachers met 3 times to share, discuss and plan
2010 - 2011
- Ryerson PS opens in September, full wireless access, class sets of iPods
- Millen Woods PS opens in January, full wireless access, class sets of iPods, iPads
- 2 Wireless Access points installed in every elementary school (Library and Office areas); 3 in every high school
- iPod project continues, expands to include a 4th school and adds 2 iPads in each of the classes; teachers continue to discuss, share and report
- Kindergarten iPad project launched in 6 schools
- WRDSB staff work on a revised Responsible Use Policy
- individual schools begin to discuss and create wireless / personal devices policies and begin to introduce the concept of personal devices as learning tools
- Millen Woods is the first elementary school to create a policy (with input from teachers from other schools, and collaboration among teachers, parents and students in the Millen Woods community) and welcome BYOD in classrooms; it was decided that the policy would be printed in the student planner for 2011-2012
2011 - 2012
- ITS Goal: by the end of 2011/12, every school will have wireless access in approximately 85 - 90% of learning spaces
- iPods and iPads are added as a peripheral option on the CATC plan for elementary schools
- many schools are investigating the purchase of iP*ds for student use; some are considering class sets to become a 'mobile lab'
- schools continue to discuss and create wireless and personal devices policies
- IT will be offering courses in the new year on using iP*ds and personal devices in the classroom
FRANKLIN PS
2010/11
- school funds were used to add a third wireless access point in a new wing of the school
- as a result of this, 5 classrooms had wireless access - 2 teachers were involved in a collaborative project with teachers from 3 other schools (Ryerson, Millen Woods, St. Andrews), called 'Canada Connections' - used Adobe Connect to share projects with 5 classes
- teachers used a variety of personal devices (laptops, netbooks, iPads, iPods) in classrooms and made these available to students
- conversations began about how to make better use of the wireless network
2011/12
- September - school funds are used to purchase 8 iPads
- October - conversations about wireless policies and BYOD begin with admin / CATC group; School Council approves funds for further IT purchases
- future - more school-owned devices?, students will BYODs?, PD with teachers re: use of iPads and personal devices as learning tools
